Picture book rules on KDP
What size should a picture book PDF be for KDP?
With bleed, add 0.125" to the width and 0.25" to the height of your trim size. An 8.5" × 8.5" book becomes 8.625" × 8.75". Without bleed, the PDF is exactly the trim size.
Why does KDP keep rejecting my Canva picture book?
The usual reasons are bleed added on all four sides, art touching the edge in a no-bleed file, and text closer than 0.375" to the edge. The checker spots all three and tells you the setting that causes each.
How close to the edge can text be?
At least 0.375" from the top, bottom and outside edge when the book has bleed (0.25" without bleed), and at least 0.375" from the spine edge for books up to 150 pages. Text also has to be at least 7 pt.
Can I make a hardcover picture book on KDP?
KDP hardcovers need at least 75 pages, so most picture books (24 to 40 pages) can only be paperbacks there. For a hardcover, IngramSpark and Lulu print shorter books.
Does my file get uploaded anywhere?
No. The free check runs in your browser, so the PDF never leaves your computer. That's also why it works with large files.
What do I get with done-for-you?
